From 1952 Esplin Family Bulletin: David Esplin, Grandfather's brother, in his letter of 7 Nov. 1855, also David Annand, his brother-in-law, in his letters of 25 Dec. 1852 and 28 Nov. 1853, tell of William Esplin's departure to Australia in June 1852, to work at the "gold diggings." David received one letter from his stating that he had a good "passage" and had worked at Melbourne a month at his won trade and was leaving on the morrow for the "gold diggings" and that when he got settled he would write again. Nothing more was ever heard from him, except that the man he worked with sent home word that he subsequently returned for his tools and left again. The family advertised for him but could find no trace of him. I hope to find his birth or christening date on the parish register and it may be possible to find a cemetery record of him in Australia. |
