Additional Scriptures About Tithing

What is Tithing

The Bible Dictionary tells us that the word tithe denotes a tenth part, given for the service of God."

D&C 119:1 All of section 119 is about tithing. We are to give all our surplus property to the Church. Then after that, give a tenth, D&C 119:4, of all our interest annually. If we don't do keep this convent then Zion won't be a land of Zion.

Genesis 28:20-22 Jacob made a vow that he would give the tenth part unto the Lord. Tithing has always been a tenth.

Tithing was paid in biblical times

Genesis 14:18 Tithing is first mentioned in the scriptures when Abraham came back with the spoils from rescuing Lot and the people of Sodom. He paid tithes to Melchizedek. See also Hebrews 7:2 and Alma 13:15. This scripture in Alma also tells us that his tithe was "one-tenth part of all he possessed."

Deuteronomy 14:22-23 The Children of Israel are commanded to tithe all there increase.

In the Law of Moses the children of Israel were to dedicate a tithe unto the Lord (Leviticus 27:30). In verse 32 the children of Israel were instructed to pick randomly every tenth of their flock without looking to see if it was good or bad. In the early days of the Church in this dispensation, when they used to pay in kind, it was left up to the individual if they were going to chose the good or the bad for the Lord.

Hebrews 7:5 In biblical times it was the Levites to whom tithes were paid.

Deuteronomy 26:12 The tithe was to be paid to "the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow"

Numbers 18:26-28 The Levites were to take a tenth part of the tithe and offer it as a heave offering that was given to the priests.

Deuteronomy 12:5-6 The children of Israel are instructed to gather their tithes and offering to the temple.

Nehemiah 10:35-39 The Children of Israel were to bring the firstfuits of all their increase to the Levites. They were also to provide tithes. I would assume that the tithes probably included the firstfuits. A portion of the goods (a tithe of the tithes) was to go to support the priests and the other workers in the temple. A big part of Nehemiah's reforms was to build the temple and get people to contributing to the temple. See verses 38-39 and also Nehemiah 12:44-47, and Nehemiah 13:12.

2 Chronicles 31:5 King Hezekiah tells the people they need to pay tithes and they respond generously.

Matthew 23:23 This is the scripture where Jesus gets after the scribes and Pharises because they pay tithes on every little thing but ignore the more important things like mercy and faith. At the same time the Savior doesn't discount the need to pay tithes. It wasn't just in biblical times that paying tithing is easier than being a good Christian.

Luke 18:10-14 This is the story of the two men going into the temple to pray, the Pharise and the publican. The Pharise is proud because he pays tithes. This is an other example that shows that the Jews paid tithing in biblical times.

Blessings of paying tithing

Malachi 3:8-10 This is the scripture that I always think of when tithing is mentioned. It is pretty strong words that we are robbing God when we don't pay our tithing. Even more significant is the promise in verse 10 that He will "open you the windows of heaven." Jesus also gave these same teachings to the Nephites 3 Nephi 24:7-11

D&C 64:23 "he that is tithed shall not be burned at his coming."

D&C 85:3 Tithing is to help prepare us for the day of vengeance and burning that will come.

Proverbs 3:9 We are told that if we "Honor the LORD with thy substance," we will be blessed materially.
