Patience

We should wait patiently for the Lord to correct all wrong

If we wait patiently on the Lord all things will work together for our good, D&C 98:1-3. Don't loose confidence but instead have patience and you will receive the promise, Hebrews 10:34-37. We have hope and patience for those things that are not seen, Romans 8:24-25. "Be not weary in well-doing," D&C 64:32-33 The work on the temple is to be continued in diligence and patience, D&C 127:4. If we are patient in our tribulations we will receive rest, 2 Thessalonians 1:4-7. We need to have patience in persecution so that our hearts are not hardened, Alma 1:21-25.

Wait patiently for the Lord to correct all wrongs, Psalm 37:7-8. Leave vengeance to the Lord, Romans 12:17-21. We are not to avenge others but instead love our neighbors, Leviticus 19:18. We should not recompense evil but instead wait on the Lord, Proverbs 20:22. We are to be patience and turn the other cheek, Mathew 5:38-41 and 3 Nephi 12:38-41. We are not to revile against revilers, D&C 19:29-30. We are to be patient toward all men, 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15.

We are to show patience by forgiving those who cause offense, 2 Corinthians 2:5-8. We are to be patient even with our enemies, D&C 98:23-26. We are not to treat others that wrong us as they have done to us, Proverbs 24:29. Even though we are persecuted for righteousness sake we need to have patience, Luke 21:16-19.

Patience is one of the attributes necessary to be like Jesus

We need to have patience to gain eternal life, D&C 101:37-38. Among the fruits of the Spirit are Long-suffering and meekness, Galatians 5:22-23. Those who continue patiently in the gospel will be blessed, Romans 2:6-8. We are to follow after righteousness which includes patience, 1 Timothy 6:10-12. With patience we also need to develop love, Alma 13:27-29. We need to continue in patience until we are perfected, D&C 67:12-14. One of the attributes that qualify us for missionary work is patience, D&C 4:4-6. Patience is one of the items Peter list for the divine nature, 2 Peter 1:4-8.

We must put off the natural man and become submissive and patient, Mosiah 3:19. "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us," Hebrews 12:1-3. We need to be humble, submissive and patience in all things, Alma 7:23. "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding," Proberbs 14:29. "A soft answer turneth away wrath," Proberbs 15:1. We need to be patient and slow to anger, Ecclesiastes 7:8-9.

"The trying of your faith worketh patience," James 1:2-4. Through tribulation we gain patience and through patience hope, Romans 5:3-5. Through patience and the scriptures we can have hope, Romans 15:4-6. We can develop charity which is long suffering, 1 Corinthians 13:4 and Moroni 7:45-47.

We need to show patience with other Church members

We are to love our brethren and treat each other courteously, 1 Peter 3:8-9. We need to have patience in waiting for the tree of life to grow, Alma 32:40-43. We are to teach the doctrine with patience, 2 Timothy 4:2. We are to have patience one with another in love, Ephesians 4:1-4.

Priesthood influence must be exercised with patience and long-suffering, D&C 121:41-44. The ministers of God need to be patient and long-suffering, 2 Corinthians 6:3-6. We are to be patient when our brother sins against us, Mathew 18:21-22, Luke 17:3-4 and D&C 98:39-43. Members of the Church who repent are to be forgiven, Moroni 6:7-8. The Corintians are admonished because they are taking each other to court, 1 Corinthians 6:5-7. We are to forbear and forgive one another in the Church, Colossians 3:12-14.

The Twelve Apostles are to teach in lowliness of heart and continue in long-suffering, D&C 118:2-3. The decisions of the leading quorums of the priesthood are to be made using patience, D&C 107:30. The servants of the Lord must be gentle and patient, 2 Timothy 2:23-26. A bishop should be patient, 1 Timothy 3:2-3.

We need to forgive others so that we can be forgiven

In the Lord's prayer we are instructed to forgive our debtors so that we can be forgiven, Mathew 6:12-15, Luke 11:4 and 3 Nephi 13:11-15. In our prayers we need to forgive others so that we can be forgiven, Mark 11:24-26.

If we expect to be forgiven we need to forgive others, Mosiah 26:29-31, D&C 64:8-11 and D&C 82:1.

Examples of patience

Christ is our example of suffering patiently, 1 Peter 2:19-23. Jesus was patient with those who mocked him at the Crucifixion and said "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." Luke 23:34. We have to have patience in affliction as did Alma's people in the city of Helam, Mosiah 23:20-22 and Mosiah 24:14-16. Paul praises the Thessalonians for their good works and patience in the hope of Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4. Alma praised Shiblon because of his patience among the Zoramites, Alma 38:3-5.

Abraham was promised a large posterity but he had to wait patiently for the promise to be fulfilled, Hebrews 6:11-15. Job had the patience to endure suffering, James 5:7-11. When Isaac dug a well and the herdsmen of Gerar claimed the water was theirs, Isaac had patience and just moved on, Genesis 26:17-22. Joseph showed patience in forgiving his brothers, Genesis 50:18-21.

In the scriptures people and groups have been commanded to have patience. The sons of Mosiah are told to be patient in their afflictions, Alma 17:10-12. They bore with patience their afflictions, Alma 26:27-28. The poor Zoramites are counseled to have patience in their afflictions, Alma 34:40-41. Joseph Smith was also told to be patient in afflictions, D&C 24:8-9, likewise Thomas B. Marsh, D&C 31:7-10, and Newel Knight, D&C 54:10.

Miscellaneous scriptures on patience

John uses patience of Jesus Christ as a name for the gospel, Revelation 1:9, also "patience and the faith of the saints," Revelation 13:10 and Revelation 14:12-13.
