Charity is The Pure Love of Christ

Charity is the pure love of Christ, Moroni 7:43-48. Charity is the bond of perfectness, Colossians 3:11-15. Faith, hope and charity go together, but charity is the most important, 1 Corinthians 13:13. In chapter 7, Mormon tells us about faith, hope and charity, Moroni 7:1. If we have faith, hope and charity the Lord will help us overcome our weaknesses, Ether 12:27-28. If we have faith, hope and charity we will abound in good works, Alma 7:23-24. Pure religion is to help those in need, James 1:27.

"He who loveth God love his brother also," 1 John 4:20-21. Those that love God love the children of God, 1 John 5:1-2. Love of God also brings love of all mankind, 2 Nephi 31:20. The Holy Ghost fills us with hope and love, Moroni 8:25-26. We need to love one another as the Savior loves us, John 13:34-35, John 15:11-13, John 15:17, Ephesians 5:1-2, 2 John 1:5-6, D&C 88:123-126 and Moses 7:32-34. We need to let brotherly love continue, Hebrews 13:1-2.

Follow after charity, 1 Corinthians 14:1. We are to have charity and a pure heart, 1 Timothy 1:5-7. "Clothe yourselves with the bond of charity," D&C 88:123-126. "Let all your things be done with charity," 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. We are to have charity one to another, 2 Nephi 26:30.

We need to be merciful unto our brethren, Alma 41:14 We need to love mercy and walk humbly before the Lord, Micah 6:8. Mercy is one of the weightier matters of the law, Matthew 23:23.

All that is good comes from Jesus Christ, Ether 4:12-13 and Moroni 7:12-13. We are to be merciful as our Father in Heaven is merciful, Luke 6:35-36. The fruits of the Spirit include love, gentleness and meekness, Galatians 5:22-23. The righteous show mercy, Psalm 37:21. Mercy claimeth her own, D&C 88:40. "Be not weary in well-doing," D&C 64:33. The Lord considers our charitable deeds unto others as if we were giving them unto Him, Matthew 25:34-40.

To have charity we need to love even our enemies, Matthew 5:43-47, Luke 6:27-29 and 3 Nephi 12:43-45. We are to help our enemy in his time of need, Exodus 23:4-5. Treat even your enemies with kindness, Romans 12:17-21.

The Righteous Show Charity

The second great commandment is love thy neighbor, Matthew 22:36-40 and Mark 12:28-31. We are to do unto others as we would have them do unto us, Matthew 7:12 and 3 Nephi 14:12. "Let every man esteem his brother as himself," D&C 38:23-25. We should love our neighbor as our selves, Leviticus 19:17-18, Matthew 19:19-20, Luke 10:25-28, Romans 13:8-10, Galatians 5:13-15, and James 2:8-9. We need to have love toward each other, 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13. We are to love all men, D&C 112:10-11 and 1 John 3:23.

We need to be patient with each other and follow the example of the prophets, James 5:9-11.

We need to "love one another with a pure heart," 1 Peter 1:22-23. The Lord expects up to have mercy with each other, Hosea 6:6, Matthew 9:11-13 and Matthew 12:7-8. We need to consider the things of others like our own, Philippians 2:1-4.

We are to have charity, patience and love family members, Titus 2:1-5. We are required to forgive our brothers, D&C 64:9-11. Live joyfully with your wife, Ecclesiastes 9:9. Husbands and wives are to care for each other, 1 Corinthians 7:3. We should be kind and tenderhearted with each other, Ephesians 4:31-32. We are to teach our children to love one another and we are to help others, Mosiah 4:14-16. We should be knit together in love, Colossians 2:1-3. We should live together in peace and love, 1 Peter 3:8-11 and D&C 42:45. "A friend loveth at all times," Proverbs 17:17We should show kindness to those who are afflicted, Job 6:14. We are to show compassion to the deaf and the blind, Leviticus 19:14.

We Need to Have Charity to be Saved

To be saved in the kingdom of God we need to have charity, Moroni 10:20-22. Paul teaches that no mater what else we do, if we have not charity we are nothing, 1 Corinthians 13:1-8. Without charity we can do nothing, D&C 18:19. If you don't have charity you are as dross and of no value, Alma 34:27-29.

Those who are to be partakers of the divine nature need charity, 2 Peter 1:4-9 To fulfill the law of Christ we need to bear each others burden, Galatians 6:2. Having charity is one of the necessary attributes to be qualified for missionary work, D&C 4:4-6. To assist in the work of the Church in the last days we need to have charity, D&C 12:7-8.

Those the persecute the humble will be hewn down and cast into the fire, Alma 5:54-56. If we persecute others we can't expect to be saved, Alma 5:30-31. The Lord condemns the rich who will not share, D&C 56:16-17. Those who do not share with the poor will be condemned, D&C 104:17-18.

Those That Have Charity Will be Blessed

"Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth," 1 Corinthians 8:1 "Perfect love casteth out all fear," Moroni 8:16-17. "Blessed are the merciful," Matthew 5:7 and 3 Nephi 12:7.

"The merciful man doeth good to his own soul," Proverbs 11:17. Those that show mercy to the poor are happy, Proverbs 14:21-22.

The Lord blesses those who remember the poor, Psalm 41:1-2. It is more blessed to give than to receive, Acts 20:35. Those that give to the poor will be blessed, Proverbs 22:9. If we give generously we will also receive generously, Luke 6:38. Those that give to the poor will not lack for themselves, Proverbs 28:27.

The Lord does not forget your labors of love, Hebrews 6:10. "God loveth a cheerful giver," 2 Corinthians 9:6-7. It is better to live with little and have love, than have plenty and a life full of strife, Proverbs 15:16-18.

On the other hand those that oppress the poor will be punished. Those that mock the poor will be punished, Proverbs 17:5. Those that don't help the poor will not be heard in their time of need, Proverbs 21:13 and will come to poverty themselves, Proverbs 22:16.

It is a Personal Responsibility to Care for the Poor and Needy

Extended families are to help widows so that it doesn't fall to the Church, 1 Timothy 5:16.

The rich should be willing to give to others, 1 Timothy 6:17-19. The rich despise the poor and persecute them, 2 Nephi 9:30. The righteous help the poor while the prideful ignore them, Alma 4:12-13. We are to respect the poor the same way we do the rich, James 2:1-7. The proud rob the poor because of their fine things, 2 Nephi 28:13.

We should have compassion toward those that are in need, 1 John 3:17-19. We need to help those that are oppressed, Isaiah 1:16-17. Remember those who suffer adversity, Hebrews 13:3. We are to help care for the stranger, Deuteronomy 10:17-19. Love one another and help those in need, Romans 12:9-14. We need to remember the poor and the needy, D&C 52:40.

King Benjamin reminds us that we need to share with the poor, Mosiah 4:21-26. We need to help the poor and the needy, Isaiah 58:6-7, Mormon 8:39-40, D&C 42:30-31, and D&C 44:6. We are to open our hand wide to the poor, Deuteronomy 15:7-8 and Deuteronomy 15:11. Give to those who ask, Matthew 5:42, Luke 6:30 and 3 Nephi 12:42. We should be generous with our things to help others, Jacob 2:16-19. We are to give to others, Luke 3:9-11. Lending to the poor is lending to the Lord, Proverbs 19:17. When you make a feast invite the poor, Luke 14:12-14. A good man gives to the poor, Psalm 112:9.

We are to give alms of the things we have, Luke 11:41. When we give to others it must not be grudgingly, Moroni 7:5-8. The Lord expects us to give alms in secret, Matthew 6:1-4 and 3 Nephi 13:1-4.

The Church Should Care For the Poor and Needy

There have been times when the members of the Church had all things in common. In the city of Enoch there were no poor, Moses 7:18. The early saints in the New Testament time had all things in common, Acts 2:44-45. The people in American had all things common among them after being visited by Christ, 4 Nephi 1:3. The people lived together in love, 4 Nephi 1:15-17, and dealt justly with each other, 3 Nephi 26:19.

The Children of Israel were to leave the last of their harvest for the poor, Deuteronomy 24:19-21. The Children of Israel were to let their lands rest every seventh year so the poor could eat what grew of itself, Exodus 23:10-11. The Israelites were instructed to leave the gleanings of their harvest for the poor, Leviticus 19:9-10 and Leviticus 23:22.

The power of the priesthood is to be used with "gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned," D&C 121:41-44. To use the priesthood we need to have charity towards all men, D&C 121:45-46. The ministers of Christ need to show kindness and love unfeigned, 2 Corinthians 6:3-7. The decisions of the quorums of the leaders of the Church are to be made in kindness and charity, D&C 107:30-31. High priest can have compassion on others because they too have infirmity, Hebrews 5:1-2.

As members of the body of Christ all members should care for each other, 1 Corinthians 12:25-27. We need to show compassion to our brother and those who are distressed, Zechariah 7:8-10. We need to have charity for other of the Church, 1 Peter 4:8-10. The Church should help the poor and the needy, D&C 38:34-36. The Church storehouse is to help provide for the poor and the needy, D&C 83:4-6.

There was problem in the early Church when the widows were being neglected, Acts 6:1. The leaders of the Church at Jerusalem remind Paul to remember the poor, Galatians 2:10.

Examples of Having Charity Both Good and Bad

The story of the unforgiving debtor as contrasted with the good samaritan illustrates people without compassion, Matthew 18:23-35. The father in the parable of the prodigal son shows charity for his son, Luke 15:20-21. The parable of the good Samaritan shows us what it means to have charity, Luke 10:29-37.

The people in King Benjamin's time were taught to have love towards God and all men, Mosiah 2:3-4. King Nebuchanezzar is instructed to show mercy to the poor, Daniel 4:27. The rich young man was instructed to sell all that he had and give it to the poor, Matthew 19:21-22, Mark 10:20-22 and Luke 18:21-23. Robert D. Foster is instructed to clothe himself with charity, D&C 124:115-116.

Examples where people have shown charity. The widow casting two mites into the temple treasury shows true charity, Mark 12:41-44. In Book of Mormon days the members of the Church gave to all who were in need, Mosiah 18:26-29 and Alma 1:29-30. Nephi has charity towards all people, 2 Nephi 33:7-9. The people of the Church in Alma's day shared with the poor, Alma 1:27-28. Enos was concerned for and earnestly prayed for both the Nephites and the Lamanites, Enos 1:9 and Enos 1:11. The saints in Macedonia and Achaia made a donation to the poor saints at Jerusalem, Romans 15:26. The disciples in Antioch sent aid to the people in Judea, Acts 11:27-30. Thomas B. Marsh is commended because of the alms he has given, D&C 112:1.

There are examples that showed mercy in difficult circumstances. Jesus asked the Father to forgive the men that crucified Him, Luke 23:34. David showed kindness to King Saul even though Saul wanted to kill him, 1 Samuel 24:10 and 1 Samuel 26:23. Moroni does not kill the lamanites if they will make a covenant of peace, Alma 44:6. David showed kindness to Jonathan's son, 2 Samuel 9:3. The people of Melita showed great kindness to Paul and the others who were shipwrecked, Acts 28:1-2.

There are many examples through history where peoples and cultures have not shown charity. One of the sins of Sodom was to not help the poor and needy, Ezekiel 16:49. Jonah is reprimanded by the Lord because he didn't have compassion for the people of Nineveh, Jonah 4:10-11. The people of Judah have oppressed the poor and the strangers, Ezekiel 22:29. The Lord did not bless the Nephites because of their pride and the way they treated the poor, Helaman 4:11-13. The Zoramites treat the poor as if they had no value, Alma 32:2-3. The members of the Church in Missouri were chastised because they didn't live by the law of the celestial kingdom and care for the poor and afflicted, D&C 105:3-4.

In the last days the love of many will wax cold, Matthew 24:12 and Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:30. In the last days people will love money more than the poor, Mormon 8:36-38. Moroni prays unto the Lord that the Gentiles would have charity. However, the Lord response that it doesn't mater to his salvation. The Lord might be saying that the Gentiles will not have charity (at least the Gentiles in general). Ether 12:33-37.

Miscellaneous Scriptures on Charity and Love

The thirteenth article of faith talks about the good things we should be doing, Articles of Faith 13.

We are to freely give the blessing of the gospel to all, Matthew 10:8.

He that hates his brother is in darkness, 1 John 2:9-11 and can be considered as a murderer, 1 John 3:14-16.
