Symbols of Christ

The Beginning and the End

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last. Revelation 1:8, Revelation 1:11, Revelation 21:6, Revelation 22:13, 3 Nephi 9:18, D&C 19:1, D&C 38:1 and D&C 45:7.

The Lord is Endless and Eternal D&C 19:10-12.

The Lord is without beginning of days or end of years Moses 1:3.

Endless and Eternal is my name Moses 7:35.

Christ is The Bread of Life

Jesus is the bread of life, John 6:35 and John 6:48-58. When we partake of the fruit of the tree of life we eat of the bread and water of life freely, Alma 5:34.

The manna that the Children of Israel ate in the wilderness can be compared to the Bread of Life, Deuteronomy 8:3 Revelation 2:17.

The bread in the Sacrament is symbolic of the Bread of Life.

"Feast upon the words of Christ," 2 Nephi 32:3. Feast upon the Lord's love, Jacob 3:2.

Christ is The Lamb of God

The animal sacrifice that were practiced since the time of Adam were in similitude of the sacrifice of the Son of God, Moses 5:5-8. Jesus is the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world, John 1:29 and Alma 7:14. Christ is a lamb without blemish, 1 Peter 1:19-21. The Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8 and Moses 7:47. The Lord was "brought as a lamb to the slaughter," Isaiah 53:7 and Mosiah 14:7.

Our robes can be made white through the blood of the lamb, Revelation 7:13-14, 1 Nephi 12:11, Alma 13:10-11, and Ether 13:11. We are cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, Mormon 9:6. Satan is overcome by the blood of the Lamb, Revelation 12:10-11.

John sees the Christ as a lamb that had been slain with seven eyes and seven horns, Revelation 5:6. In the JST it is: "having twelve horns and twelve eyes, which are the twelve servants of God, sent forth into all the earth." Showing that John is referring to Christ and his apostles. The Son of the Eternal Father is the Lamb of God, 1 Nephi 11:21 and 1 Nephi 13:40. The Lamb is the Lord of lords and King of kings, Revelation 17:14. Christ is The Light of The World

Jesus is the light of the world. Since I work with light (mostly infrared) at work all the time I have wondered if the scientific understanding of light could be used as a metaphor for spiritual light. So far I have not been able to make much of a connection. It seems the most useful part of the metaphor is the one everyone experiences. Light gives us a way to see what is around us and so it opens up the the world around us to understanding.

Jesus declares Himself the light of the world, John 8:12, John 9:4-5, 3 Nephi 9:18, 3 Nephi 11:11, 3 Nephi 18:16, D&C 10:70, and D&C 6:21. Christ is the light and the life of the world, Mosiah 16:9, Alma 38:9, 3 Nephi 11:11, and D&C 10:70. Christ is the light of men, John 1:4-5 and D&C 93:9. Christ is a light to the gentiles and the people of Israel, Luke 2:32. The Lord will be a light unto his people, 2 Nephi 10:14. The Lord is the law and the light, 3 Nephi 15:9. Christ is the light, life, and truth of the world, Ether 4:12. The word of the Lord is truth and light, D&C 84:45. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light, Isaiah 9:2 and 2 Nephi 19:2. Matthew tells us that Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, Matthew 4:14-16.

Christ is the light that we should hold up before the world, 3 Nephi 18:24. Let us walk in the light of the Lord, Isaiah 2:5 and 2 Nephi 12:5. The Lord will be a light unto me, Micah 7:8. The Lord is my light and my salvation, Psalms 27:1. Luke 1:79. The Lord will be an everlasting light for us, Isaiah 60:19. Christ will give us light, Ephesians 5:14.

John the Baptist was sent to bear witness of Christ who was the Light of men, John 1:8-9. This scripture is listed in the Topical Guide under Jesus Christ, Light of World, but it may refer to John the Baptist instead of Christ. Of course he was doing the work of the Savior to give light unto them that sit in darkness.

The Lord is the potter and we are the clay

The Lord is the potter and the house of Israel is the clay, Jeremiah 18:1-6.

"We are the clay, and thou our potter," Isaiah 64:8.

Christ is The Rock of our Salvation

Jesus is the stone or rock of Israel. We are made strong by the stone of Israel, Genesis 4:24. The stone the builders rejected will become the head of the corner, Psalms 118:22, Matthew 21:42-45, Luke 20:17-18, Acts 4:10-12, and 1 Peter 2:5-7. Christ is the only sure foundation to built on, Jacob 4:15-16 and Helaman 5:12. Those that build upon this rock shall never fall, D&C 50:44. Christ is a stumbling stone to the unrighteous, Romans 9:32-33, 1 Peter 2:8, 2 Nephi 18:14-15 and Isaiah 8:14-15.

There is no rock like our God, 1 Samuel 2:2 and Psalms 18:31. The Lord is the rock, Deuteronomy 32:3-4, Psalms 18:46, and 1 Corinthians 10:1-4. The Lord is our rock, 2 Samuel 22:2, Psalms 18:1-3 and 1 Nephi 15:14-15. Isaiah 17:10-11. The Lord is the rock of our salvation, 2 Nephi 4:30, 2 Nephi 9:45, Jacob 7:25, Psalms 62:6, and 1 Nephi 13:36. The Lord is the rock of Heaven, Moses 7:53. Lead me to a rock that is higher than I, Psalms 61:2.

The Living Water

We can "draw water out of the wells of salvation" which is Christ, Isaiah 12:2-3 and 2 Nephi 22:2-3.

Israel has ignored the living water and made themselves broken cisterns that can hold no water, Jeremiah 2:13. Wells without water, 2 Peter 2:17.

Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well He has the living water, John 4:5-15.

Jesus told the people to come unto Him and drink, John 7:37-39.

The fountain of living waters represents the love of God, 1 Nephi 11:25.

Those that keep the commandments will have a well of living water springing up in them, D&C 63:22-23.

Those that thirst can come to the waters of Christ, Isaiah 55:1, Revelation 21:6, Revelation 22:17 and 2 Nephi 9:50-51. As we gather unto Christ we can freely partake of the waters of life, D&C 10:65-67.
